Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the DALF

Prerequisites, validity, dictionary, word count: short answers to the questions people ask before registering.

Do you need the DELF B2 to sit the DALF C1?

No. Each diploma is independent: you register directly for the level of your choice.

Can you sit the DALF C2 without having the C1?

Yes, for the same reason. Just make sure your level is up to it: the C2 is considerably more demanding.

Does the DALF expire?

No. The diploma is valid for life.

What is the difference between the DALF and the TCF?

The TCF is a test: it places your level on the CEFR scale, and its certificate is valid for a limited period. The DALF is a diploma: you either pass or you don't, and it never expires.

Is the DALF C1 enough to study in France?

The DALF C1 or C2 can meet the French-language requirements of many higher-education programmes in France. However, the conditions vary depending on the institution, the programme and the admission procedure: check the requirements that apply to you.

Can you use a dictionary?

At C1, only while preparing the oral production paper. At C2, during both papers. It is always a monolingual French dictionary lent by the centre.

How are words counted?

A word is any group of characters between two spaces. « C'est-à-dire » counts as one word, « un bon élève » as three. State the total at the end of your text.

Do the topics relate to a particular field?

No. Since March 2020, DALF C1 and C2 candidates no longer choose between the fields of “humanities and social sciences” and “sciences”. The topics deal with social issues designed to be accessible to everyone, whatever their specialism.

How long does it take to prepare?

It depends on your starting level, your goals and the time you can devote to French. From a solid B2 level, allow several months of regular work if you are aiming for the C1. For the C2, it may take longer. Practise written and oral production in particular, under exam conditions.

How much does the exam cost?

Fees are set by each exam centre and vary from country to country. Ask the centre where you wish to register.

When do you get your results?

Within two months at most after the exam, from your centre.

Can you retake the exam if you fail?

Yes, as many times as you wish, provided you have received your results before registering again.
