Practical steps
Registering, sitting the exam, getting your results
The practical steps, from choosing an exam centre to receiving your diploma, and your rights as a candidate.
Registering
You sit the DALF at an approved exam centre: an Alliance française, an Institut français, a university or an educational institution, in France or abroad. Each centre sets its own session dates and fees; ask the one that suits you. The list of centres is published on the France Éducation international website.
- You register directly for the level of your choice, without having to show any previous diploma or test.
- Choose the tout public (general public) version, intended for adults.
- If you have already taken a DELF or DALF, give your candidate code: it appears on your previous exam notices and on your diplomas.
- If you have a disability, say so when you register. Special arrangements may be granted on presentation of a medical document less than two years old that meets France Éducation international's requirements, sent to the exam centre at least two months before the exam.
After registering, you receive an exam notice stating the place, date and time of each paper.
On exam day
What to bring:
- a valid identity document, with photo and signature, on paper: a digital version is not accepted;
- your exam notice;
- a pen with black or blue ink.
The rules:
- Arrive at least thirty minutes before the start.
- Your phone and electronic devices are switched off and put away where indicated.
- The exam is anonymous: never sign your paper and do not write your name on it. If an instruction asks you to sign a letter, use a made-up name.
- You are given sheets of scrap paper; they are not marked.
Results
Results are released by your centre within two months at most. Each paper is marked by two markers or examiners.
- If you pass, you collect your diploma from the centre, on presentation of an identity document. It is valid for life. In the meantime, you can ask for a provisional certificate of success.
- If you do not pass, you can register again as soon as the results are published, as many times as you wish.
You may consult your paper for one year after the exam, according to your centre's procedures. The examining board's decisions are final: they can be challenged only in the event of a clerical error or an irregularity in the conduct of the exam.
If you cannot attend
If you cannot attend for a justified reason, backed by a medical certificate, you can request a refund of your registration fee or a transfer to the next session.
